THE NET4GAS CLOSER TO NATURE PROGRAMME PRESENTS OVER 60 INTERESTING NATURAL SITES IN AN EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINING MANNER. YOU CAN SET OFF FOLLOWING THE ST. JOHN’S RAPIDS (SVATOJÁNSKÉ PROUDY) IN AUTUMNALLY COLOURED COUNTRYSIDE OR COMPARE THE LENGTH OF YOUR JUMPS WITH ANIMALS AT THE ZASMUKY PHEASANTRY (ZÁSMUCKÁ BAŽANTNICE)!

The St. John’s Rapids

The cliff path above the River Vltava from Třebenice to Štěchovice leads through places with rich histories and outstanding nature, with gorgeous, unrepeatable views. Once a wild canyon and the scourge of raftsmen, following the construction of the Štěchovice Dam it has retained much of its charm. Due to its atmosphere it was much loved by tourists and roamers, who set up one of the first colonies here called Ztracenka. The original nature trail was in a very bad state, thanks to the NET4GAS Closer to Nature programme it was completely reconstructed in autumn 2013 by Zvoneček, an affiliate of the Czech Union of Nature Conservation.

The St. John’s Rapids trail is 8.5 km long and has 15 stops. It deals with the surrounding nature, live in the river, on the cliffs and in the game park, rafting, the history of roaming, the dam and the neighbouring villages. There are interactive elements for children – recognising birds, the clever string, a wooden sculpture of an owl and questions on the information panels. Two rest sites were built on the trail with new signs. Moreover the information signs have QR codes that allow visitors to listen to roamers’ songs on their smart phone or view an extensive photo gallery. The trail is only recommended for hikers.

DIRECTIONS: The starting points for the trail are Štěchovice and Třebenice. Both towns have bus connections. We recommend starting off in Třebenice as the buses are more frequent from Štěchovice.

Compare your jumps with animals at the Zásmuky Pheasantry

Above all younger visitors will enjoy comparing their jumps with those of animals, they can test their knowledge of birds using rotating signs, get to understand the food chain in nature with the aid of puzzles or play on a model beetle. Where? On the brand new Zásmuky Pheasantry nature trail, which, thanks to the NET4GAS Closer to Nature programme, was built last year by Zásmuky,
an affiliate of the Czech Union of Nature Conservation.

Zásmuky Pheasantry will familiarise you with the history of this game reserve, above all with how white stags were reared as hunting trophies or with the ancient oak called Leopold. At the same time it will introduce you to the fauna and flora that you can see around you: for instance lesser celandines, anemones, corydalis flowers, Stars-of-Bethlehem and primroses or bats, squirrels and a number of cavity nesting birds. You can also take a peep down the Deer Tunnel, gaze at the stream running through it from the safe path above it or take a break at one of the seating areas.

DIRECTIONS: The trail lies on the edge of the village Zásmuky in the Kolín district, several hundred metres from the centre, between the bus stop Zásmuky, žel.st. and the Zásmuky railway station.
