HOW TO SPEND A PLEASANT SUMMER AFTERNOON OR FREE WEEKEND IN BRNO? THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT BRNO OFFERS ITS INHABITANTS AND VISITORS TESTIFY TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS CERTAINLY NO ROOM FOR BOREDOM IN THE SOUTH MORAVIAN CAPITAL. QUITE THE OPPOSITE. THE FOLLOWING OVERVIEW WILL GIVE YOU TIPS FOR INTERESTING TOURIST DESTINATIONS TO VISIT. THOSE THAT LOVE HISTORY, ART AND ARCHITECTURE WILL COME INTO THEIR OWN, AS WILL FAMILIES WITH KIDS.

ŠPILBERK CASTLE

In the 18th century the royal Špilberk Castle was the gaol of nations, holding the Habsburg monarchy’s most infamous prisoners. Now it offers visitors several permanent exhibitions and a tour of the underground casemates. After extensive reconstruction the castle’s south wing opened to the public at the end of May. Here two new permanent exhibitions have found their home: From Modernism to the Present – Gallery of Contemporary Brno Art and For a New Brno – Architecture in Brno 1919 – 1939. An interesting achievement inspired by the work of Comenius is the exhibition by Petr Nikl entitled Games Crystallisate open from 28 October

UNDERGROUND KINGDOM

The Brno underground has three parts that are accessible and tempts one from the heat of the streets and squares with its cool labyrinths. The Mintmaster’s Cellar in Dominican Square in the New Town Hall building allows visitors to submerge themselves in the city’s regal history and even meet Bruno the Mintmaster. The Labyrinth Under the Vegetable Market takes you on no less a famous history of this site giving you a glimpse of life in mediaeval Brno, including a visit to an alchemist’s workshop or a prison. The third part of the Underground Kingdom is a unique ossuary under St. James’ Church, the second most extensive in Europe after the Paris catacombs.

VEVEŘÍ CASTLE

The second castle in Brno looms above the Brno Reservoir in the gorgeous landscape of the Podkomorský Forest. It is a gothic, formerly royal and hunting castle covered in myths and legends. Nowadays various cultural and social events take place at the castle. Those that love exhibitions can see the Dragons and Dragon Slayers (until 31st August) and 800 Years of Castle Veveří (4th July – 31st October). The journey to the castle can be livened up by taking the steam boat along the reservoir – the season is in full flow.
