THE UBER SERVICE IS SIMPLE – THE CUSTOMER WRITES IN THEIR MOBILE WHERE THEY WANT TO GO, WHICH IS IMMEDIATELY DISPLAYED TO THE DRIVERS IN REACH. WHOEVER ANSWERS, GETS THE FARE. TAXI DRIVERS ARE UP IN ARMS ABOUT THIS CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE, DESPITE THIS THE SERVICE IS ON ITS WAY HERE. MAYBE THIS SERVICE WILL FINALLY FORCE PRAGUE TAXI DRIVERS TO STOP RIPPING OFF THEIR CUSTOMERS.

The company, which was formed in Silicon Valley in 2009, has had its eye on the Czech market since last year. It is now operating in 36 countries. Originally the application was only associated with drivers of black, luxury cars, nowadays, though, it also offers normal, i.e. cheaper, vehicles.

Everything’s going on-line

All communications with Uber and the drivers go through the mobile. The drivers are often the owners of the car, in order for them to drive for Uber they have to pass a test. The price of the ride is calculated by a program according to the day and the hour. The service works very simply – the customer writes in their mobile where they want to go, which is immediately displayed to all the drivers in reach. Whoever answers first, gets the fare. Payments are only by card to the Uber account, the driver then gets paid later (minus a 20 percent fee to the company).

By all accounts Uber even has support from Prague’s politicians. “New and good-quality competition can go a long way to improving the situation in Prague’s taxi services. Prague has no objections to new entities entering the market,” announced Lukaš Manhart, of TOP 09, who is in charge of taxis at Prague City Council.
