The dreamy landscape of the forests in south-eastern Bohemia offers a unique sight, the last narrow gauge railway in the Czech Republic. The rails, just 760 mm apart, lead from Jindřichův Hradec to Nová Bystřice in the south or to Obrataň in the north. The trains travelling along it remind us of the development of rail transport as well as giving us a romantic day out. What is more it is a living monument that you won’t see that often.

The first private operator of a public railway in the Czech Republic is the company Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy, a. s. (Jindřichův Hradec Local Railways). It provides regular passenger and freight transport with motorised engines. In the summer season it also puts on regular steam trains with period coaches.

If you wish it will also put on a private train. You can end the excursion with a picnic or supper in the forest station at Hůrky. Here you will find a bar, seating and a fireplace made for relaxing.

The railway stations of the Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy, a. s. also issue memorial period tickets made of cardboard – just like they used to in the old days. The printing press for these tickets is at Kamenice nad Lipou. It is the only one of its kind in the country. They print custom made travel tickets, calling cards, wedding invites and cards to order.

Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy, a. s., is unique in that it provides year-round accommodation in apartments at the railway stations. So you can spend a holiday at the railway stations at Střížovice, Hůrky, Kunžak-Lomy, Albeř and Nová Bystřice. Right in the heart of the picturesque countryside of Southern Bohemia, where after awakening, a train is waiting in the backyard to take you on a trip to where the foxes sleep…

Many celebrities have set off on one of these excursions. One luminary associated with the narrow gauge is Jára Cimrman. As an eternal memorial to him a plaque was raised at Kaproun Station and his statue unveiled. The station is now a cult destination for Cimramn fans from all over the world.

The narrow gauge – a steam locomotive with the smell of a fairytale hell, the summer landscape gently rolling by as though painted with a coloured brush, the misty forests and mown meadows will fill your lungs with the most beautiful perfume in the world spinning your head into delirium…An unrepeatable atmosphere and a mass of experiences … Come and see for yourselves!
